Mario Resource: April - June

Two months have passed since I unveiled the new Version 3 Mario Resource. The next two months are crucial for me as I have to focus on my GCSEs. During this time I am most likely to only update the news. However, with 2 weeks off at the Easter Holidays, hopefully I can fit in some updates around revision.

I still have many "Game Info" and "Reviews" pages to convert into the new format. I also want to get infomation onto the site about some newer Wii games which I have neglected, DS games included.

Yesterday I saw some new screenshots of upcoming Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and they look great. I've put them on the main website.

So updates will probably be few and far between from now until around the middle of June. My last exam is on the 11th June 2009, so maybe after that I will be able to start delivering some more content and news on Mario Games and announcements.

A Guide To: DSiWare

When the third model of the Nintendo DS, the DSi was announced back in October 2008, news came out that there would be an online download service for it. DSiWare (if you didn't know already) would enable the user to download games via the Nintendo DSi Shop, much like the WiiWare service on Wii. Downloads come under four points brackets, based upon the game content:

Free of Charge
Programs which have previously been announced such as the DSi Browser and the Moving Notepad.

DSiWare 200
Very compact, small games, priced at 200 points

DSiWare 500
Simple puzzle games and other, more complex utility applications priced at 500 points

DSiWare Premium
Bigger games and applications priced at 800 points

At this point in time, the DSiWare service is only available in Japan, as the DSi is yet to have made it to American, Australian and European shores. Also there are four "Mario" games which have been released on the DSiWare they are:

Chotto Dr. Mario - 500 points
The game is just a "smaller" version of the Wii's Dr. Mario & Germ Buster, which the reduction of a few features

Kami Hikōki - 200 points
A remake of the classic WarioWare Inc: Mega Microgame$, Paper Plane

Tori to Mame - 200 points
A remake of mini-games, Pyoro and Pyoro 2 again from WarioWare Inc: Mega Microgame$.

Utsusu Made in Wario - 500 points
A new game in the WarioWare series. In the game Wario decides to open an Amusement Park.

The DSi is currently priced at ¥18,900, which is roughly £140. Sales figures varied from sources but were around 170,000 within the first 2 days. First month's sales around 535,000, which is down on the DS Lites first months sales which were 550,000.

According to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's president, the DSi will be available to the rest of the globe before Q4 2009. It's European release is predicted to be in Spring 2009, with America later in 2009. Reason being, "DS Lite's sales still strong".

Nonetheless, the DSiWare service allows it's users games and applications, which can be easily downloaded. These games don't have to be in-depth to be worth playing, some simple puzzle games aswell as Mario Minigames seem to fit the DSi's purpose just right.

More on the DSi, and it release dates later in 2009

Looking Back: 2008

It doesn't seem like 5 minutes ago that we were welcoming in the new year for 2008. However, now it is New Years' Eve and soon 2009 will be here. In this post, I'm going to be looking back at the key events in the world of Mario during the past 12 months.

One Mario game to be released in 2008 was Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It was the third installment in the Nintendo fighting series Super Smash Bros. The game was initially announced before E3 2005. However it took 3 years for it to arrive on European shores on 27th June 2008. The game, as always, delivered fun filled action with not just Mario characters but the whole of Nintendo's different franchises.

Mario Kart Wii was released on the 11th April 2008 on the Nintendo Wii. The long running Kart series turned a new corner as Motorbikes accelerated onto the scene. As well as this, players experienced the new Wii Wheel to drive their karts. The game was and still is a huge hit. In Japan and North America the game sold more than 1 million copies in one month alone.

Dr Mario returned in 2008 aswell. Germ Buster was the latest installment of the Dr. Mario series and was released through the WiiWare service. Players must use pills to destroy the viruses. The game also made use of the online service.

The Mario sport series saw a new title aswell in 2008. Mario Super Sluggers became the second baseball game for Mario. The game is pretty simple really and follows the normal format of a game of baseball. However the game is yet to be released in Europe and Australia, and no date has yet been given.

Other games released this year include Captain Rainbow which features some Mario characters such as Birdo. Super Mario RPG and Yoshi's Cookie were both re-released on the Virtual Console respectively.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl also picked up the Official Nintendo Magazine Game Of Year award at the Golden Joystick Awards 2008.

2008 didn't hold as many Mario game releases as previous years, however, Mario Kart Wii and Brawl are both big games and I think this compensates for that. Not many announcements have been made for 2009 other than Mario & Luigi RPG 3 which has been slated for Japan in February.

Happy New Year, all the best for 2009 from Mario Resource..

Merry Christmas!

First of all I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2009.

Now, the negatives. Don't worry I wont rattle on too long. I can't promise much in the way of lots updates on Mario Resource over the festive period as I havent had time to prepare due to mock exams. All that will be added will probably be a few DSiWare related pages with some information on the Japanese releases (Pyoro, Paper Plane and Chotto Dr. Mario)

However I have been working on Version 2.1. I brought in version 2 about 6 - 8 weeks ago and I wasn't comfortable with it. So I have made a few adjustments. The Christmas graphics are partly like the new look and they will stay online until 3 or 4th January.

Looking back over 2008, a lot has certainly happened. Mario Resource was born in August and has really grown over the past few months. I got my first GCSE, an A in science. I became possibly the worst person to ever play Call of Duty 4, ever. Then there was the announcement of the DSi and there was plenty more to do.

Looking ahead to the new year it is an important one for me. It's my GCSE year so I will be focusing my time on that between January and June. After that from June to September I will have time off to do what I want! After that in September I will be going to Sixth-Form, again another important time.

As for the world of Nintendo, the DSi is to be released in North America, Europe and Australia as well as other places in sure. Mario & Luigi RPG 3 is to be released in Japan in February with probably other Mario games to be announced.

A final word from me, enjoy christmas, have a good time and I hope you continue to visit Mario Resource in 2009!

Golden Joystick Awards: The Nintendo Winners

The 26th Annual Golden Joystick Awards took place this week and there was only a few winners for Nintendo. The awards, hosted by comedian, Frankie Boyle, were without doubt, dominated by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Activision. 4 awards went to the modern day, first person shooter, along with one for upcoming Call of Duty: World at War and Guitar Hero 3 and Activision itself picking up and award each respectively.

However was only 2 awards which went to Nintendo games. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass grabbed Bliss Handheld Game of the Year and Super Smash Bros. Brawl got the award for Nintendo GOTY award. Mario Kart Wii was nowhere to be seen unfortunatly.

However, in other news, I was recently looking at some sales figures on GoNintendo, and here are just a few:

New Super Mario Bros.
April - Sept 08: 1.73 Million
Overall Total: 15.89 Million

Mario Kart DS
April - Sept 08: 1.67 Million
Overall Total: 12.12 Million

Mario Party DS
April - Sept 08: 1.11 Million
Overall Total: 4.73 Million

Mario Kart Wii
April - Sept 08: 9.35Million
Overall Total: 9.53Million

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
April - Sept 08: 2.61 Million
Overall Total: 7.47 Million

It's good to see that Mario Games are still selling in their millions.

Mario & Luigi RPG 3

Last week, big news came of the third model of the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DSi will launch in Japan on 1 November 2008, just in time for christmas. The new features and improvements make the DS Lite seem old to me. Screens which are 17% bigger, built in 3 megapixel camera, built in downloadable service (DSiWare) & Opera internet browser, SD Card slot, improved audio and the whole system being 12% thinner would make many Nintendo Fan's mouth's water.

On the same day as this thrilling news came exciting news of Mario & Luigi RPG 3! I was beginning to think that the announcement of a new Mario game for the DS was becoming a "once in a blue moon" sort of thing. So far the playable characters we know of include; Mario, Luigi and Bowser. The trailer which was shown at the Nintendo Conference on 2 October didn't show an awful lot of gameplay. However there was an appearance of a giant "toad" character, spherical in shape rolling around. Few changes have been made to the battles. Bros. Items will make a return. A new feature is the Mario/Luigi bar at the bottom of the screen but there is no information on what this bar is for. Some other changes include Bowser using X to punch and Y for firebreath and some Overworld icon changes.
No release dates have been confirmed yet. It is expected for release in Japan during 2009 and most likely to follow in America, Europe and Australia later.
Make sure you look at the Mario & Luigi RPG 3 page on the main website for details on the game. I will try to update that when new information is released.
